Before you make the decision to move to Mexico permanently, be sure to visit several different towns and see what each has to offer. Different cities have different personalities and available activities, as well as varying amount of other retirees living there. Currently, the most popular retirement communities are in Guadalajara and the nearby Lake Chapala area, Puerto Vallarta, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Cuernavaca, Manzanillo and Oaxaca. All of these locations are along or near to the Pacific coastline of Mexico, and have mild to hot temperatures year-round

Before moving south of the border permanently, you must weigh the advantages and disadvantages of moving to a foreign country. We'll start with the advantages. First of all, rent will be cheaper. Depending on where you choose to live, rent could be extremely cheap or extremely expensive, but you can easily rent a nice apartment or house for around $300 to $600 per month.

Health Insurance

Most retirees are highly concerned about the quality and availability of health care when moving to or retiring in Mexico. Most medical benefits stop at the border, so it is important that Canadian and U.S. retirees in Mexico investigate their current health insurance policy to find out what is and isnt covered while living abroad on a permanent basis. There are many options available for retirees who want to buy separate insurance when living and retiring abroad. Getting the IMSS (Mexican Social Security) is one option for the foreign retiree; however you may want to see if this is the right option for you as a foreigner. It covers the expenses of medical, dental and vision, but may not provide sufficient coverage for what you need in terms of of individual social security. International health insurance, travelers insurance and global medical insurance are some of the other options available to retirees looking to buy private health care.
