By: 360 Travel Staff

You may be aware from media reports that there is currently a worldwide increase in the incidence of a mild gastrointestinal illness caused by Norovirus, (formally called Norwalk Virus).  It has caused many outbreaks particularly throughout North America and Europe.  Whilst the majority of these outbreaks occur ashore, a small number of cruise ships have been similarly affected.  Norovirsus is so widespread in the community that only the common the common cold is reported more frequently.  In, fact, the United States CDC estimates that up to 1 in every 12 persons in the US will contract this illness on land each year.

Should you experience any symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea whilst onboard ship, notify the ships doctor at once.

Norovirus is highly contagious and thus easily passed from person to person.  The easiest way to help prevent the Norovirus is to wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap for at least 20 seconds and rinse them well under running water.  It is recommended that you follow this procedure each time you use the restroom, after coughing or sneezing and before eating, drinking, or smoking.
