Revisiting Mt. Sinai, Mount Moses

By: Cassandra Ingraham

I cant help but to wonder about Sinai during those famous 40 years.  And it is obvious that more and more people are having the same thoughts.  Tourism to Sinai has more then tripled in the past decade.

So begins one of the Bible's most memorable sagas, the 40-year wanderings of Moses and the Israelites through the vast and barren prison of Sinai. No story has done more to put Sinai on the map than Exodus, and for many, a visit to the land where manna fell from heaven and Moses received the Ten Commandments is nothing short of a pilgrimage http://www.geographia.com/egypt/sinai/biblicalsinai01.htm

Chapel of the Holy Trinity on the peak of Mount Moses (Mt. Sinai)

Mount Mousa (or Musa), also referred to as Jebel Musa, Gebel Mousa, Mount Moses or the Mountain of Moses (all of which basically means the same thing) is considered to be that biblical peak. This peak has religious significance to Islam as the place where Mohammed's horse, Boraq, ascended to heaven. The 7,497 foot mountain has 3,750 steps hewn out of stone by monks of St. Catherine's Monastery, which is located just to the North. The peak is accessible by the steps, or by a gentler path east of the monastery. Both lead to an amphitheater known as the "Seven Elders of Israel". From there, one must ascend the remaining 750 steps to reach the summit where the Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built in 1934 (on the location of the original chapel built in 363 and rebuilt by Justinian in 530) and affords a truly breathtaking view. It is recommended that you take the steps down, as they will lead you past the fountain of Moses, a small chapel of the Virgin, and two arches, the Gate of St. Stephen and the Gate of the Law.

Once in Cairo you can Book a side trip to Mt. Sinai

Authors Note on Travel to the Middle East:

With unrest in the Middle East all of us are more cautious about booking tours to the Holy Land.  However, thousands of people are still making the journey.  And for this we must be thankful. It has always been my theory that people in the Middle East are hiding some of the details and we will never know unless we get off the couch and go see for ourselves I must admit, once I arrived in Egypt they answered all my questions without hesitation.

One of my greatest travel mistakes was traveling all the way from San Francisco to New York to Paris and then to Egypt, and NOT going to the Holy Land. So I am always planning, in my mind, to take a group to the Holy Land, Egypt and Mt. Sinai (If you have a sincere desire to make this journey please email me at
