You can save up to 40% on airfares when searching for "Hot-Fares"  Hotwire will provide the departure and destination location and the dates of travel.  They will disclose the airlines and the hotel accommodations once your purchase is made. (This is so you won't know where the surplus is until after your purchase)

 

 

Another excellent site to find cheap 2 and 3 star accommodations is TripReservations.com   This site has no problem listing economy hotels.  And while you are booking your hotel, check out the car rental 

 

Another choice is Travelocity.  You can find cheap hotel rates right up to 3 or 4 days prior to check in.  Travelocity includes economy  hotels.
